i'm like... fuming over how ridiculous this conservative moral direction of Bush's reign is turning out. just because he is against abortion (and homosexual and pre-marital sex etc) for moral reasons because he is oh-so-religious-and-moral, he has to impose these values on everybody, including countries outside his
rule governance, which is what i've gleaned from this latest move.
US is supposed to be a state of freedom and librty, a secular state with no bias or leanings towards any religion, yet Bush is making changes that tend towards a more moral and religions US that infringes on the human rights charter that US was (note past tense) famous for.
the demand to add anti-abortion language to a UN declaration on women's rights is just- just... bloody irritating in the way that US thinks it can do whatever it wants just because it is a superpower or something. can you imagine what would happen if US had its way? victims of rape stuck with an unwanted pregnancy through no fault of theirs would be unable to get an abortion. females with health conditions that would endanger their lives if they gave birth would not have the choice to choose to not keep the baby. poor couples with no way of supporting another child has no right to choose to terminate the unplanned pregnancy.
Bush's solution to unwanted and unplanned pregnancy? abstinance. well excuse me, but i think you have no right to tell people how to live, that they cannot have sex, cannot have abortion, cannot have the right to decide what to do and not do with and to their bodies.
i understand that abortion is essential taking a life, terminating the baby before he has a chance to live. but sometimes people have no choice (oo poor to suppotr a child, health complications, not ready for parenthood etc). i'm not saying i agree with those people who regard abortion as a sort of contraceptive instead of taking measures to prevent unwanted pregnancy, but people should have a choice to choose. it is not right to impose one's morals and religion and beliefs on others (i'm sure that's somewhere in the human rights charter). one can advise and educate as much as one wants (refering to Bush's plan to curb the spread of Aids/ abortion where a third of the budget allocated is spent on education), but the choice should be left to the individual.
to add the anti-abortion language to the UN declaration on women's rights is to make it illegal. if the case ever comes up in court, the judge can always say 'you have no right to abort the baby (technically embryo if it's not fully formed if i remember correctly) hence you are guilty of homicide (killing the embryo) and will be sentenced to jail for some years... i'm sure you can just imagine the lovely scene.
in addition to increasing the number of law cases involving abortions, it would not help if abortion is made illegal or something because the 'business' would go underground and then lead to all sorts of unsafe and fatal abortions because there's no regulation and health checks.
i shall not go into how his policies regarding abortion is affecting other people, like the increasing number of women in south america who are dying because of unsafe abortion and lack of contraceptive due to closing down of family planning and advise agency because of withdrawl of funds from US unless those agencies sign a gag rule agreement not to talk about abortion (where's the freedom of speech if you can't een talk about abortion?), and how idiotic these policies are. read the other related articles if you are interested.
